Our first trip to Joffre Lakes Provincial Park for the year.
We have four new Scouts to introduce to winter camping.
Let’s see how they did….

Saturday morning sunrise over Joffre Lakes Provincial Park.
Well the sun’s up….so what’s for breakfast?
Goal Zero solar charging system….keeps the tunes going for those cold days when you just gotta dance to stay warm.
Q. “Hey guys…..where do you want to go next?”
A. “Up there!” The Scouts point up at the Matier Glacier hanging thousands of feet above basecamp. Okay guys, but you’re going to need a lot more training before you’ll get a crack at that bad boy!
Snowshoers disappear into the mist on the other side of the lake on their way up into the mountains for the day.
The Scouts: “Okay, you’ve got us all here by the flag now what?” Me [quickly]: “I now declare this camp open….now go have some fun with the utility toboggan!”
Pre-lunch patrol pow-wow in the Scouts’ camp kitchen.
Scouts learning the basics of companion rescue by taking turns searching for buried avalanche beacons in the area around their campsite
The sun gives Matier one last kiss before disappearing from the sky for the night.
The Scouts begin preparing their Saturday night dinner. This was four of the Scouts’ first time carving a kitchen and living area into the snow. I bet their next one will be even better.
Happy campers preparing dinner.
Really happy campers preparing dinner!
Saturday night campfire under a clear sky up in the mountains of Joffre Lake Provincial Park. The light on the lake just left of center is the headlamp of a member of a team of backcountry skiers coming down the mountain very late Saturday night. They were probably as surprised to see us there that night as we were to see them.
Obligatory frost covered flag on avalanche probe and sunrise shot.
Sunday morning sunrise over the mountains of Joffre Lakes Provincial Park. Our four new winter campers all survived with style! I’m very proud of these young guys. We’ll be back to the Joff’ real soon!
